NOTICES

Notice of Anti-Discrimination:

Firebird Children's Theatre does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national or ethnic origin, physical and mental disability, and sexual orientation in any of its activities or operations. These activities include, but are not limited to, hiring and firing staff, selection of volunteers and contractors, educational programs, admission policies, and theatre productions and activities made available to students and performers at Firebird Children's Theatre.

Notice of Anti-Harrassment:

Firebird Children’s Theatre is committed in all areas to providing an environment that is free from harassment. This policy is intended to cover all student participants, performers, volunteers, employees, contractors, and anyone else working with the Firebird Children’s Theater. Harassment based upon an individual’s sex, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, or any other legally protected characteristics will not be tolerated. All participants, employees, volunteers, supervisors, contractors, and other management personnel are expected and required to abide by this policy. No person will be adversely affected in employment/contract or participation in Firebird Children’s Theatre as a result of bringing complaints of unlawful harassment.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive workplace or atmosphere. It includes behavior of a sexual nature that is unwelcome and offensive to the person or persons it is targeted toward. Examples of harassing behavior may include unwanted physical contact, foul language of an offensive sexual nature, sexual propositions, sexual jokes or remarks, obscene gestures, and displays of pornographic or sexually explicit pictures, drawings, or caricatures. Use of the Firebird Children’s Theatre computer system for the purpose of viewing, displaying, or disseminating material that is sexual in nature may also constitute harassing behavior.

If any individual, including but not limited to employee, contractor,  volunteer, or student performer, feels that he or she has been harassed on the basis of his or her sex, race, national origin, ethic background, or any other legally protected characteristic, he or she should immediately report the matter to his or her supervisor or instructor. If that person is not available, or if the individual feels it would be unproductive to inform that person, the individual should contact the Firebird Children’s Theater personnel responsible for human resources as soon as is reasonably possible. Once the matter has been reported, it will be promptly investigated and any necessary corrective action will be taken where appropriate. All complaints of unlawful harassment will be handled in as discreet and confidential a manner as is possible under the circumstances.

Any individual engaging in improper harassing behavior will be subject to disciplinary action, including the possible termination of employment/contract and/or participation with the Firebird Children’s Theater and depending on severity, the police may be involved.

Firebird Children’s Theater (FCT), an elective theatre workshop for youths, strives to provide the same educational experience to all participants. However, FCT is not a school or daycare facility and as such, is not equipped or obligated to provide special services, including but not limited to, nursing staff, PCAs, the administering of medications, OT, PT, speech therapy, behavioral therapy, any other type of therapy, or IEP services. If special services are needed to accommodate a participant, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to arrange for these services in advance with approval from FCT. Services must be provided by the parent or guardian and made available for the entire course of the workshop or as needed. FCT will work with aides, nurses, therapists, and parents to ensure a positive and beneficial workshop experience for all our staff and participants. However, given the nature of the FCT program, there may be some accommodations which cannot be made. Those decisions rests solely within the discretion of FCT.

Firebird Children's Theatre Intimacy Coaching Policy:
Effective Date: May 27, 2025
Approved by Firebird Theatre Board

PURPOSE: To ensure the physical and emotional safety of all cast members, particularly minors, during the staging of scenes involving physical contact, affection, or romantic elements, including but not limited to hugging, hand-holding, and stage kisses.

GENERAL GUIDELINES (APPLICABLE TO ALL CAST MEMBERS)
  1. Transparency & Notification
All scenes involving physical contact or intimacy must be approved by and communicated in writing to the Board and parents/guardians (for minors) before any rehearsals of such scenes begin.
  2. Consent and Comfort
Participation in any scene involving physical affection is optional. No performer—regardless of age—may be forced or pressured into performing any physical action they are uncomfortable with.
Actors may opt out at any time. Alternative staging (e.g., implied rather than shown affection) will always be available.
  3. Use of Trained Intimacy Coach
For any scenes involving physical affection or romantic content, a trained intimacy coordinator or coach must be present, or staging must be done under the direct supervision of a Board member with two staff members present, including at least one female adult.
  4. Closed-Door Sessions Prohibited
Closed-door coaching sessions with minors are strictly prohibited. Any scene coaching involving physical contact must take place in open or observable spaces with at least two adults present, one of whom must be female.
  5. Minors-Specific Protocol
All scenes involving kisses or suggestive contact with or between minors must be avoided unless approved by the Board in advance and communicated to all parents in writing.
Firebird Theatre strongly encourages choreographed alternatives (e.g., hugging, hand-holding, off-stage implication) to romantic scenes for minors.
  6. Parent/Guardian Communication
Parents/guardians of minors must receive a copy of this policy and be notified in writing of any scene involving physical contact before rehearsals begin.
Parents are allowed to observe such rehearsals.
  7. Documentation and Approval
Any scene involving intimacy must be listed in the Director’s Scene Breakdown Sheet and signed off by the Board prior to first rehearsal.  Documentation must include the names of supervising staff present during staging or coaching.
  8. Training
Directors and staff working with cast members under age 18 must receive annual training on consent, boundaries, and appropriate coaching practices, including review of this policy.
  9. Reporting Violations
Any violation of this policy must be reported immediately to the Board. Violations may result in disciplinary action, including dismissal from the production.
