We are very excited to present live, interactive, on-line classes, taught by Firebird Instructors, for you and your Firebird friends!
The Firebird Theatre On-line Academy offers performers of all ages, skill levels, and interests the opportunity to keep singing, dancing, and learning the art of acting, musical theatre, and performance with your friends while safely social distancing at home!
Choose from this exciting menu of new courses, which include a total of five lessons, given once a week over five weeks, and several as a week long intensive! Session I classes begin June 1st and end July 2nd, 2020.

ONE-WEEK SUMMER INTENSIVE COURSES
Making a Musical - MONDAY through FRIDAY A collaborative effort between fellow students to create, write, organize, direct, choreograph, design, produce their very own Jukebox musical. The teacher will be overseeing the work and only helping when needed. Artistic/Production roles will be voted on by the class, then followed by an audition for the show. At the end of the session, the original musical will be performed virtually for family/friends. LEVEL I: This intro class focuses on training the actor in Acting, Singing and Dancing through warm-up, exercises and activities. Each class will start with a brief acting game/exercise, a vocal and dance warm up followed by a group rehearsal for a (song,scene,dance,etc). Every student will be given appropriate selection(s) by the teacher to rehearse and work on for the duration of the classes. The theme of this course is “Songs from the Magic Screen-dom”. Featuring songs inspired by Disney and Pixar movies. They will have opportunities for coaching/feedback from the teacher but are required to rehearse often on their own. At the end of four day intensive, the students will learn and perform songs for each other, and can submit recordings of their solo performances for a chance to be featured in a Firebird promo on our YouTube channel! LEVEL II: This class is for an actor with theatre training and show experience. The actor will increase their skills in Acting, Singing and Dancing through more advanced warm-up, exercises, teachings and activities. After an initial audition, every student will be given appropriate selection(s) by the teacher to rehearse and work on for the duration of the classes. The theme of this course is “Ghost Light Musicals” inspired by music from current Broadway shows that have gone dark because of Covid-19. They will have opportunities for coaching/feedback from the teacher but are required to rehearse often on their own. At the end of four day intensive, the students will learn and perform songs for each other, and can submit recordings of their solo performances for a chance to be featured in a Firebird promo on our YouTube channel!

What A Character! - MONDAYS The Very Very Gingerbread Man, A Musical Play for Young Children! Our story follows The Amazing Gingy, a life-sized Gingerbread Man, through his journey from the bake shop into the outside world! Gingy is full of spice and is constantly on the move! On his journey through the forest, he encounters a unicorn with a magical music-playing horn, two grouchy cockatoos, a trio of buzzing bumble bees, and a Gingerbread-hungry Fox! Join us on our journey to learn what happens to Gingy and all of his magical friends! Learn the songs and dances from the comfort of your own home! Meetings are typically held using WebEx Meetings (very similar to Zoom), and a link will be sent out earlier in the day of each class. Song recordings and other materials will be provided prior to the start of classes so you can start to get familiar. Each week we will learn new songs and dances and incorporate them into the narration of the story! It will be a wonderful opportunity to expel some energy, see and meet new friends, and have a chance to sing and dance! Musical Theatre Audition Bootcamp! - MONDAYS For those who struggle with the audition process or would like to improve this extremely important skill. Musical Theatre Audition Bootcamp will teach you the do’s and don’ts of auditioning, how to pick songs that fit you, the professional way to introduce yourself (slate), performing cold reads/scenes, and how to excel at a dance call. In addition, each student will receive detailed feedback from the teacher with a chance to fix/apply notes. Every class will act as a new audition. Students will have gone through the “audition process” numerous times at the completion of this session. Musical Theatre Dance - WEDNESDAYS LEVEL I: The perfect place to start your training or continue to develop basic dance skills/knowledge. Every class begins with a warm-up for strengthening and flexibility and across the floor/ basic technique. Depending on time remaining, dance games and exercises are there to help better understand things such as terminology, musicality, ebb + flows of the music and connecting to the meaning behind the lyrics. To end the class, a choreography session is held. Dancers learn and perform the choreography taught to them. Musical Theatre Dance I is designed to start the groundwork of each student’s training. This 1 hour class is a treat for those that love having fun while working hard and seeing results. LEVEL II: *Each dancer has to have previous training/experience along with a skill set regarding Musical Theatre Dance.* The goal of this class is to give each dancer the tools and teachings to becoming an Advanced dancer. Special attention will be directed to technique, form and retention of choreography. Musical Theatre Dance II is a high energy, high intensity dance class that focuses on the importance of confidence, team morale, team bonding and communicating to oneself and each other through art. Every class begins with a thorough warm-up for strengthening and flexibility and across the floor/technique. Depending on the teacher’s plan for that class session, numerous dance exercises/lessons/challenges may occur in order to ensure not only the physical growth of these dancers, but the mental and emotional growth too. During the latter end of the class, there is a choreography session. This could either be the instructor teaching their own original choreography to the dancers or the dancers creating their own choreography. Incorporating the high technical proficiency for expression, characterization, style, improvisation, choreography and its retention, and showmanship, this 1.5 hour dance class achieves more than meets the eye. The Art of Production Dramaturgy - TUESDAYS How can a dramaturg’s work enrich a production? How can a dramaturg support the artistic vision of the director and the work of the creative team? In this 5-week course, we will take a deep look at the role of the dramaturg and discuss how dramaturgs help transform a text into a rich theatrical experience. We will analyze short dramatic texts - both classic and contemporary. We will also discuss the evolution of dramatic form. More importantly, we discuss how dramaturgs can use their knowledge of plays and dramatic history to inform production practices. When a student leaves this class, they will have the skills they need to serve as a production dramaturg! Introduction to Dramaturgy - THURSDAYS What is dramaturgy? What does a dramaturg do? What do you need to be a good dramaturg? These are the questions we will tackle in this 5-week course! We’ll analyze short dramatic texts, learn several research techniques, and explore the different functions of a dramaturg! The Actor's Toolbox - THURSDAYS Once you’ve analyzed your text and you’ve developed an understanding of your character, then what? How do you put that analysis into action? This course teaches basic actor craft - simple techniques any actor can use to develop a rich and compelling character. In this 5-week course, we use scripted exercises to explore physical, verbal, and rhythmic techniques!
